Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. The most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season brings its haunting and hopeful journey to Procter & Gamble Hall at the Aronoff Center from May 14-16, 2027. Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this acclaimed musical from celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today…and always.
Hadestown intertwines two mythic Greek tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell's beguiling melodies and Chavkin's poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown is a theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.
Hadestown marks the first time in over a decade that a woman has been the sole author of a musical—writing the music, lyrics, and book—and is only the fourth time in Broadway history a woman has accomplished this creative feat. The show originated as Anaïs Mitchell's indie theater project touring Vermont before becoming an acclaimed 2010 concept album featuring Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) as Orpheus, Ani DiFranco as Persephone, and Greg Brown as Hades. With director Rachel Chavkin, the material was transformed into a genre-defying musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz.
Beyond its eight Tony Awards, Hadestown has been honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Outstanding New Broadway Musical), and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical. The Broadway production opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019, playing sold-out houses nightly before the pandemic pause. Hadestown resumed performances on September 2, 2021, as one of the first musicals to reopen on Broadway. Follow @hadestown on Instagram and visit hadestown.com.

Hadestown is a sung-through musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. It reimagines the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set against a Depression-era industrial underworld. Orpheus, a young singer-songwriter, falls in love with Eurydice, who descends to the hellish factory world of Hadestown to escape poverty. Orpheus follows to rescue her, bargaining with the king of the underworld himself. The musical explores themes of love, sacrifice, hope, and the power of art to change the world.

The show premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016—becoming the longest-running show in that theater's 40-year history. It transferred to Edmonton's Citadel Theatre (2017), London's National Theatre (2018, sold-out), and finally to Broadway in 2019.
